A-Level Computer Science (AQA)

Course Summary

Computers have transformed our lives over the last 30 years. It started with the introduction of PCs into most homes and more recently the internet and social media have revolutionised communication and the way information has spread across the world. This subject covers both theoretical concepts of Computers Science such as how information is stored and processed as well as practical aspects for the design and creation of computer software.
 
What you will study:
Paper 1: Programming, data structure, algorithms theory of computation.
Paper 2: Data representation, computer systems, communication and networking, computer organisation and architecture, consequences of uses of commuters, big data. Coursework: Students solve or investigate a practical problem. Students will be expected to follow a systematic approach to problem solving.

Paper 2: External Assessment. Written exam: 2 hours 30 minutes. 40% of A-level. Coursework - 20% of A-level.

AAQ BTEC Information Technology Extended Certificate (Edexcel)

Course Summary

This qualification is equivalent to 1 A Level.
 
The Pearson Level 3 Alternative Academic Qualification BTEC National in Information Technology (Extended Certificate) is an Alternative Academic Qualification (AAQ) designed for post-16 students with an interest in the Digital sector and aiming to progress to higher education as a route to graduate level employment. The course also offers a hands-on, real-world approach to learning, designed to give you the essential knowledge and practical experience employers are looking for.
 
What you will study:
• Information Technology Systems – Information technology systems, including the relationship between software and hardware, and the issues related to IT systems. You will understand the role of IT systems in today’s digital landscape, including how to identify and tackle cybersecurity threats.
• Cybersecurity and Incident Management – Types of cyber security attacks, the vulnerabilities in networked systems and how to plan and respond to attacks. You will learn how to prevent, detect, and manage attacks in a world where cyber threats are constantly evolving.
• Website Development – The development tools, techniques and processes used in website development and how to test usability, functionality and fitness for purpose. You will build dynamic websites tailored to specific needs, boosting your creative and technical web development skills.
• Relational Database development – Structure of data, data design and database management systems (DBMS). You will develop relational database solutions, equipping you with the skills to manage and analyse data effectively.
